Bolmsö kyrka stands on the island of Bolmsö in Lake Bolmen, within Bolmsö-Tannåkers parish in the Diocese of Växjö. This stone church, completed in the 1860s, replaced an older church on a site just to the west and remains a modest but characterful example of nineteenth-century Swedish rural church building.

The present church was built between 1860 and 1863, a little west of its predecessor, and was consecrated in 1865 by Bishop Henrik Gustaf Hultman. It is constructed of stone, with a rectangular nave and a slightly narrower, rounded chancel to the east, separated from the nave by an arched opening. A sacristy stands to the north and the tower to the west, with entrances in the west and centrally on the south side.

The building's roofline has changed over time: in 1930 the nave received its red tiled roof and the chancel and tower roof were reclad, replacing earlier wooden shingles. During the 1940s the church underwent a thorough renovation, when floors were relaid, pews rebuilt and widened, and two rows of pews removed to enlarge the chancel. New staircases were added to the porch and gallery at the same time.

Inside, two pulpits survive, the older standing on the south side and dating from 1641, an unusually early survival for this church. Its counterpart on the north side, along with the numeral boards, was made by the joiner Joel Spets of Kållerstad, who also created the current altar structure in 1865, with its profiled pediment carried on pilasters.

The altarpiece depicting the Crucifixion, with the mother of Christ and a disciple below the cross, was painted in 1917 by Gabriel Strandberg of Stockholm, replacing an earlier composition of a cross, shroud and crown made by C. M. Johansson of Karaby. An older altar arrangement for the previous church had been made in 1725 by Sven Segervall.

The font, bearing inscriptions, was brought to the church in 1941; it was designed by the provost Allgulin and made by the artist Erik Sand. The church also has an organ of neo-Gothic character built in 1870 by Carl Elfström of Ljungby, to designs drawn up in 1863 by Johan Adolf Hawerman; the instrument in use today dates from 1949 and was built by Mårtensson's organ workshop in Lund.
