Ambjörnarps kyrka is a wooden church standing at the heart of its village in Västra Götaland. Built in the early 1840s in neoclassical style, it replaced an earlier church on the same site and remains a well-preserved example of the region's rural church-building tradition.

The present church was constructed in 1840–1841 and taken into use the following year, with formal consecration recorded in 1842 (sources differ, with one giving 1848 as the building date). It was designed and built by Johannes Pettersson, a member of the noted group of master builders from Sandhult parish, and belongs to a distinctive family of nearly identical neoclassical timber churches shared with the churches at Sjötofta, Skephult, Mjöbäck and Älvsered. All feature a rectangular nave, a five-sided chancel, five bays of round-arched windows, a south entrance and a slender west tower. The exterior, with its white-painted timber panelling and gilded cross atop the tower's lantern, survives largely as built.

Inside, an unusual small enclosure beside the pulpit is thought to have served as the original sacristy, or priest's preparation room, before a larger sacristy was added to the north of the chancel. The altar is the original piece from the church's construction, though it was made movable during a 2010 renovation so the priest can face the congregation during communion. The altarpiece, an 1895 oil painting by Bertha Maria Ahlgren of Länghem depicting Christ receiving sinners, conceals the church's earlier altar image, painted directly on the wall with a motif echoing that of neighbouring Sjötofta's church.

The chancel's ornate glass chandelier was made at the nearby Limmared glassworks; following conservation at the Swedish Glass Museum in 2010, it is now lit from above rather than carrying its own candles or lamps. The font, of limed oak, was acquired in 1961, and the round pulpit with its matching sound canopy stands against the north wall of the nave. Among the bells, the larger is of late-medieval type and carries a band of lettering that has never been successfully deciphered.

The organ case, which is acoustically functional, survives from the church's first organ of 1840, designed by Johan Nikolaus Söderling; a single pipe from that instrument remains in use within the current organ, which was rebuilt in 1927 and again in 1968.

The 2010 renovation also removed level changes for accessibility, created a flexible worship space and café area beneath the organ loft, and restored the original wide-board wooden floor after decades under fitted grey carpet. The churchyard is enclosed by stone walls and part-19th-century tree plantings, with wrought-iron gates said to originate from the Strömsfors ironworks.
