By the mid-19th century the medieval church on this site, said to have stood for around seven hundred years, had become too small for the growing congregation. It was demolished, though the old tower and a handful of fittings were retained. Major Carl Ribbing was among those who pushed for a new building, commissioning master builder Anders Pettersson to design an eight-sided church, a shape thought to allow plenty of light and good acoustics for preaching. The new church, designed in 1876 and built between 1882 and 1883, was consecrated on 18 August 1883 by Bishop Johan Andersson.
According to the sources, the builder misjudged the position of the pulpit, placing it above and behind the altarpiece so that the preacher could neither be seen nor properly heard from below. It was later replaced by the older church's Renaissance-style pulpit, dating from the 1600s and decorated with figures of Christ and the evangelists, repositioned to the left of the chancel. The church's construction was otherwise economical, apart from its slender cast-iron pillars.
During the demolition of the old church, workers reportedly discovered a fragmentary bag containing around 3,000 small silver coins from the era of the rival Eric and Sverker dynasties, who contested the Swedish crown between roughly 1130 and 1250. A walled grave containing two unidentified skeletons was also said to have been found nearby, one with a long plait of hair and a still-intact stocking. These accounts derive from a contemporary newspaper notice and later local history writing, so some details should be treated with appropriate caution.
Among the church's older furnishings is a sandstone font from the 1100s, carved with animal ornamentation, which survived from the earlier medieval building along with the Renaissance pulpit already mentioned. The altarpiece, showing Christ on the cross, is thought to date from the 1700s.
The present organ was built in 1884 by Carl Johannes Carlsson of Virestad and is a mechanical instrument; it was renovated and partly reworked in 1957 by Bernhard Svensson of Oskarshamn.
