Gunnareds kyrka was built following an architectural competition held in 1990, won by the firm Sjögrens with an entry titled "Hörnstenen" ("The Cornerstone"), designed by architect Sven Magnus Sjögren. The church was inaugurated on 12 October 1997.
The building is constructed of brick in various red shades, stone and wood, on a concrete frame, with roof trusses of hand-hewn Norrland pine. At the corner facing Angered centrum, the roofline is broken by a bell tower with a visible clock. The square church hall, with a projecting choir and apse, draws on the layout of a medieval basilica, its walls built in the same red-toned brick, while the apse behind the altar is plastered.
The altarpiece, a tile mosaic titled Livets träd ("The Tree of Life") by artist Lotta Söder, fills the upper part of the apse and depicts Christ at the centre surrounded by scenes from his life. The altar, altar rail, pulpit, window frames and pews are all made of solid oak, while the font and floor are of limestone.
The church also shares its building with a preschool run by the parish, and both the church hall and an adjoining parish room can each seat around 75 people, reflecting the building's dual role as a place of worship and a community space for the Angered area.
