The present church was built in 1887–1888 to designs by the architect Herman Holmgren, and was consecrated in 1888. An earlier set of designs had been prepared by the well-known architect Emil Langlet, but the parish was reportedly unsatisfied with his proposal, leading to Holmgren's commission instead.
The building, constructed of hewn stone, rendered and limewashed, mixes architectural influences: Romanesque touches appear in the tower's sound openings, its rounded lower projections and the deep vaulted chancel, while the tower's spire has a Gothic Revival character, with pointed-arch surrounds for the clock faces.
The medieval wooden church that once stood nearby was declared unfit for use in 1870, judged too small and cramped for the growing congregation. Sources differ slightly on the date it was finally sold and demolished, with one account citing shortly after the new church's completion and another giving 1891. Its timber was reportedly reused in local house and barn construction. Notably, ceiling paintings from the old church's nave and chancel, depicting the Last Judgement and made by Johan Christian Zschotzscher in 1748, were removed and are now preserved in the Smålands Museum's church hall.
Inside, the church is light and spacious. The chancel ceiling was painted in 1957 by the artist David Ralson, drawing on the biblical image of the "armour of God" from the Letter to the Ephesians, with angels depicted overcoming vices using the pieces of spiritual armour. The font, thought to date from the 12th century, is carved with fabulous beasts, offering a striking link to the site's much older Christian history. Also of note is the triumphal crucifix by Eva Spångberg, created in 1976 during the church's most recent renovation, when the altar was also reordered.
The church organ has its own layered history: an earlier instrument built in 1759 by Sven Axtelius, a gift from a local district judge, was eventually superseded by a new organ built in 1887–1888 by E. A. Setterquist & Son of Örebro, later renovated and enlarged in 1958.
