Hunnestads kyrka, in the village of Hunnestad in Varberg municipality, is the third church to stand on this site. Its predecessor burned down in 1846, yet the modest parish resolved to rebuild here rather than move elsewhere.

The earliest known church on the site dated from at least 1597, built of stone with a red-painted timber bell tower. It was destroyed by fire in March 1846, with only a few windows saved from the flames. A new church, designed by Carl Gustaf Blom Carlsson of the Office of the Royal Buildings, was raised on the old foundations and completed in September 1848, initially without a tower and left unpainted until 1850.

In the early 1880s the church was substantially enlarged and a west tower with an octagonal lantern added, so that only the side walls of the 1848 building survived within the new structure. The old bell had to be hung temporarily from a large oak tree in the churchyard while building work was under way. The rebuilt, classicist church, of whitewashed granite with a chancel separated from the nave by a triumphal arch, was reconsecrated in 1883.

Further restorations followed in 1923, when electric lighting was installed, and in 1954, when the church was rewhitewashed outside and repainted within. During the 1954 work the artist Joel Mila decorated the apse above the chancel with scenes from the life of Christ, the main image showing Jesus with two apostles in a boat.

Among the furnishings, visitors may notice a wooden crucifix by Erik Nilsson of Harplinge as the centrepiece of the altar, a white-and-gold pulpit dating from 1883, and a hexagonal wooden font in neo-Gothic style bought in 1897 to replace an earlier stone font. Communion silver said to date from the 18th century, and a black chasuble acquired in 1897, are also among the church's older possessions. The two bells are older still: the larger was recast in 1847 and the smaller cast in 1812.

The present mechanical organ was built in 1968 by Mårtenssons orgelfabrik, though its case survives from an 1899 instrument by Johannes Magnusson. The church's exterior was renovated again in 2009.
