The islands off western Orust had previously belonged to Morlanda parish, but in 1798 permission was granted to form a separate chapel parish. Captain Abraham Gustaf Bildt of Morlanda manor helped procure timber and other materials for the church building. When the materials were brought ashore at Gullholmen, both women and men helped transport the timber to the completed stone foundation. The church was completed in the autumn of 1799. The original low tower was replaced in 1904 by a saddle roof with the current slender spire. This was done in connection with an external renovation, during which a sacristy was also built onto the church's eastern gable.
Altarpiece: The church's altarpiece was installed in 1828 and is probably by a Dutch artist.
Pulpit: The pulpit has paintings of the four evangelists with their respective symbols. The paintings were made by the artist Gunnar Erik Ström in 1949.
Organ: The organ has 17 stops. It was built in 1880 by Salomon Molander, but has been rebuilt in 1935 and 1983.
Votive ships: The church has two votive ships. The first is an unnamed full-rigged ship by Johan Högvall, donated to the church in 1945. The second, Harold, is a cutter of English type by Victor Hansson, donated in 1989.
Icon: On the south wall there is an icon depicting Saint Nicholas, patron saint of seafarers, and the archangels Gabriel and Michael. The icon was made by Mona Jaburek in 2001.
Chandelier: The chandelier nearest the gallery dates from the mid-1800s and is called "Rosander's Penalty Crown". According to the account, the preacher Rosander failed to attend a service and was fined for missing mass. With the fine, the parish bought the chandelier.
Light bearer: The light bearer in the chancel, called "In God's Hands", was designed and made by the artist Fred Leyman of Stillingsön. It was put into use on Judgement Sunday 2000. The light bearer was donated in memory of the late Florence Berg.
Communion silver: The church received new communion silver in 1971, designed by the silversmith Tore Eldh, and donated by the Red Cross on Gullholmen.
Church bells: The church's small bell dates from 1799 and the church's large bell from 1931.
