Bäckseda kyrka is a parish church of the Church of Sweden in Växjö diocese, standing above the Emån river near Vetlanda in Jönköping County. Its origins trace back to the 1200s, though the building visitors see today dates mainly from the early twentieth century.

The original medieval church was a long, narrow rectangular building without an apse, only about 6.5 metres wide but some 21 metres in length. Over the centuries it had been altered several times, with enlarged windows and a timber porch added. Inside, the ceiling bore paintings by the church painter Johan Colombus, made in 1707, while the altar incorporated parts of a Gothic altarpiece framed in Baroque style, alongside a richly carved pulpit dating from 1653.

On Good Friday, 2 April 1915, sparks from an iron stove started a fire that destroyed the church and a nearby timber bell tower. All the fixed and combustible furnishings were lost, including the elaborate 1714 altarpiece with its carved figures, the ceiling paintings, and decoration on the gallery front.

The church was rebuilt in 1917–1918 on the surviving medieval walls, under the direction of architect Otar Hökerberg of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Buildings, who aimed to preserve the character of the earlier building. A new west tower, capped with a copper-clad dome and cross, replaced the lost bell stapel.

Among the furnishings from the rebuilding are an altarpiece depicting the twelve apostles and a pulpit with sounding board, both carved in 1918 by the Stockholm sculptor Tore Strindberg, and chancel windows decorated by A. P. Ringström. Older items surviving from before the fire include a wooden collection chest from the 1600s and a longcase clock dated 1740.

The first known organ, built in 1868–1870 by Carl Johannes Carlsson of Virestad, was destroyed in the 1915 fire. The present organ was built in 1918 by E. A. Setterquist & Son of Örebro and later modified in 1960.
