The first church in the village is thought to have been a manor church, built by a powerful landowning family sometime around the turn of the 12th-13th century. The present church was built in 1684, replacing its predecessor, which was a stave church. It is described in Abraham Hülphers' account of his journey through the county in 1775. The church standing here today is probably the third in a line of churches in the parish. The master builder was Olof Ersson from Ragunda.

The bell tower from 1779 has become well known, as a copy of it stands at Skansen in Stockholm. The tower was built by the renowned church and bell-tower builder Pål Persson from Stugun. In the tower hangs the old bell from the early 1200s. From the same century there was once an old censer that used to hang in the wall sconce on the right-hand side of the altar. Unfortunately it was stolen sometime during the 1970s, and the old key to the door disappeared during the 1990s. On entering the church, one sees straight ahead above the altar a large triumphal crucifix from the late 1400s. It comes from Håkon Gullesson's workshop in Enånger. The most remarkable object in the church is the old altarpiece from the 1500s. It hangs above the entrance to the sacristy and is known as the
