Tumbo kyrka, one of six apse churches surviving in Södermanland, stands beside a group of six rune stones a short distance west of Eskilstuna. Its well-preserved Romanesque origins and later medieval additions make it a notable stop for anyone interested in the region's early church architecture.

Timber analysis of the roof structure indicates that the stone church was built sometime in the 1100s, placing it among the earliest Romanesque churches in the area. It originally comprised a nave with chancel and apse to the east, with a tower to the west. Architectural details suggest an even earlier building phase may have preceded the current structure.

In the 1400s a sacristy was added to the north and a porch to the south, and the roof of the nave was fitted with vaulting during the late medieval period. The church's tall medieval tower was dismantled in 1734, and the present tower dates from 1742–1744.

Among the church's furnishings is a pulpit from 1630, said to be among the oldest in Södermanland, decorated with images of the four evangelists. A sandstone font dates from the Romanesque period, and the church holds two altar cabinets, a smaller one from the 1400s and a larger one from the 1500s.

The church has been restored several times, including work in the 1890s, 1963, and 1986, when a new gallery was built to house a new organ. A further restoration led to a re-consecration in 2001. The current mechanical organ was built in 1986 by Walter Thür Orgelbyggen of Torshälla, replacing earlier instruments dating back to 1846.
