The parish was formed in 1922, when it was separated from Skellefteå landsförsamling (the rural parish of Skellefteå). For a short period afterwards, until May 1924, it remained joined with Skellefteå landsförsamling in a shared pastorate before becoming its own independent pastorate.
Bureå församling forms part of the Skellefte contract within the Diocese of Luleå, and its parish church is Bureå kyrka. Membership figures recorded at the end of 2019 showed just over three thousand members out of a local population of around four and a half thousand, giving a sense of the parish's continuing role in a community where church membership no longer includes everyone.
Visitors should note that beyond the main parish church, services are sometimes held at other venues within the parish boundaries. Because these gatherings are occasional rather than regular, anyone hoping to attend is advised to check the specific event details for the exact location, as no fixed schedule or single alternative site is described in the available sources.
