Degerfors kyrka stands in the heart of the industrial community of Degerfors, its log-timber walls and Neo-Gothic form reflecting the rapid growth of the parish after the establishment of the local ironworks in the late nineteenth century.

The church owes its existence to Degerfors ironworks, whose expansion drew a growing population to the area. A chapel parish was formed in 1882, the churchyard consecrated in 1883, and the timber-built church itself completed in 1892. It was designed in Neo-Gothic style, reportedly to plans by architect J Forsgren, and was inaugurated on 13 November 1892 by Bishop Claes Herman Rundgren. At that time the building had neither tower nor porch, and its bell hung in a separate wooden bell tower; a tower was added at the west end in 1897.

The rectangular nave is divided into three aisles, with a taller gabled roof over the centre and lower flat roofs over the sides. Two of the chancel's three windows received stained glass depicting Peter and Paul between 1912 and 1914, and the tower roof was clad in copper in 1931.

Two later restorations, in 1939 and 1966, transformed the character of the interior considerably. The 1939 work, overseen by architect Einar Lundberg according to one source, extended the chancel and introduced new fittings, including a pulpit carved by David Wretling with biblical scenes and a large mural of Christ in Gethsemane by Thor Fagerkvist (also spelled Fagerqvist) on the chancel's east wall. A sculpted figure of Mary by Wretling, also from 1939, hangs on the west wall.

The 1966 restoration gave the walls their unusual mottled decoration of brown and grey (with some accounts noting green and blue tones on the gallery rail), designed by artist Åke Pallarp and executed by Pär Andersson. The intention was said to be an evocation of fading autumn colour drawn out from the chancel into the wider church space.

Among the church's furnishings is a large copy of Thorvaldsen's figure of Christ, which served as the original altar ornament before 1939 and now stands near the font. The font itself, made in 1983 at Degerfors ironworks, has a wooden stand supporting the basin beneath an iron globe and arrow, a symbol associated with the Bergslagen mining region. A woven textile by Anna-Lisa Odelqvist-Kruse from 1968 is also among the church's furnishings.
