Ulricehamns kyrka stands close to the shores of Lake Åsunden in the centre of Ulricehamn, at the heart of Ulricehamns församling in the Diocese of Skara. Its plain stone walls conceal a long and layered building history stretching back to the late Middle Ages.

The church's core is thought to date from the 1300s or 1400s, when it was built of grey stone as a simple hall church with a straight-ended chancel and no vaulted ceiling. A hoard of coins discovered beneath the chancel floor during a nineteenth-century renovation, deposited around the mid-1300s, has helped date the earliest building, though sources differ slightly on whether the church itself was raised in the fourteenth or fifteenth century.

The church grew and changed considerably over the centuries. A porch was added on the south side in 1660 (later demolished at an unknown date, according to one source), and in 1684 the building was extended eastward with a new chancel, new windows and a west entrance. A burial chapel was added around 1700–1715, originally intended to double as a sacristy; it now serves as an anteroom with seating. The timber-topped tower dates from 1758, when the church was also lengthened westward, and the north-side sacristy followed in 1791. The most recent major addition came in 2002, when accessibility works added gathering spaces, a ramp and a lift beside the tower.

Inside, the barrel-vaulted ceiling is richly painted in Baroque style. Anders Falck's work of the 1680s depicts the Creation, the Fall and the Last Judgement, while later scenes—including a depiction of Cain and Abel—were added in the 1760s, traditionally attributed to a painter recorded locally as Wickström or Wikström. The west gallery carries marbling and painted decoration dated 1713, uncovered during twentieth-century restoration work.

The altarpiece and pulpit, carved in exuberant Baroque foliage, were made in 1717 by the town alderman Hans Christoffer Datan. Figures of Moses and John the Baptist, and the four Evangelists with their traditional symbols, appear among the carving, with painted panels depicting the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension.

Among the furnishings, visitors can see a finely worked silver wafer box from the 1680s and three chandeliers of differing age and style, the oldest a small Belgian piece from 1627. The three bells in the tower are comparatively modern, cast in 1929 to replace older bells that were dispersed—one now hangs in the town park, another went to Böne church and a third to Vists church. The organ case at the west gallery dates from the 1740s and survives from an instrument by Olof Hedlund, with some of its original pipework still sounding; the sources consulted disagree on the current organ itself, one describing a 1970 instrument by the Mårtensson workshop and another a 2019 organ built by Tostareds Kyrkorgelfabrik.
