Hede kyrka, the wooden parish church in Munkedal, stands on a site first recorded in 1391, when a church here appears in Bishop Eystein's land register. Dedicated to St Lars, the present building dates from 1887, replacing an earlier timber church that had stood since 1727.

The current church was designed by architect Herman Teodor Holmgren and built in neo-Gothic style, with horizontal and diagonally set timber panelling arranged in a framework pattern. Gothic detailing such as tracery and pointed arches originally gave the building a distinctive, ornate appearance, and coloured original drawings survive in the archive along with the building plans.

Around 1940, in keeping with a wider fashion for simplification, the exterior was altered and the façade stripped of much of its earlier decorative character. Something of the original style is said to remain visible inside the church.

Several older furnishings connect the present building to its predecessors. A soapstone font, dated to the 11th–12th century, is attributed to the so-called Knippekolonnmästaren, a named group of medieval carvers known from other works in Bohuslän; its carved panels include scenes such as Christ on the cross and Michael weighing souls, though such symbolic imagery invites more than one reading. An oak Madonna figure dates from the 1300s, and a baroque pulpit is variously dated to the 1600s or 1700s, its accompanying staircase added during restoration work in 1932–33.

The altarpiece, an oil painting of Christ on the cross, was made in 1755 by Jonas Ahlstedt of Uddevalla. Paintings of saints on the gallery, also from the 1700s, were rediscovered beneath the church floor during building work in 1919. The altarpiece, together with the altar and pulpit from the older church, is said to have been kept in storage for about 45 years before being reinstalled in 1932. The church tower holds bells, and an organ of 19 stops, built in 1987, stands in the south transept; the facade of an earlier 1927 organ survives on the gallery.
