Gällstads och Södra Säms kyrka

Gällstads och Södra Säms kyrka is a neoclassical parish church in the southern part of Ulricehamn municipality, serving the two former parishes of Gällstad and Södra Säm. Built in the early nineteenth century, it holds a notably ancient font among its furnishings.

The present church was designed by the architect Johan Carlberg and consecrated in 1824, replacing an earlier eighteenth-century church that had fallen into disrepair on the same site, as well as serving the neighbouring parish of Södra Säm. It was built in a restrained neoclassical style using stone, and underwent a thorough renovation in 1971, followed by a further rebuilding between 2020 and 2021 that added meeting rooms, activity spaces and staff offices to the building.

The most striking historical object is a sandstone font dating from the twelfth century, carved in two parts by a stonemason named Andreas, who is known to have signed several fonts in runic script. The Gällstad font carries an inscription recording his name, and its surfaces are decorated with birds, the Lamb of God, foliage, interlace bands and crosses. A second font, in soapstone and probably from the 1600s, originally belonged to Södra Säm's church.

The altarpiece, painted in 1874 by Anders Gustaf Ljungström, depicts the Transfiguration of Christ. The pulpit, from 1845, is thought to be the work of Johannes Andersson, a woodcarver known as "Mjöbäckssnidaren" after his home village of Mjöbäck. A brass chandelier was given to Södra Säm's church in 1782, and the church also holds a silver communion chalice dated to 1545.

Among the church bells, the largest is a late medieval casting without inscription, while the middle bell originally hung in Södra Säm's church before being recast twice; the smallest bears a dedication to a Västergötland provincial governor from 1714. The organ, built in 1933 and later reworked in 1971, retains a silent façade dating back to an earlier 1849 instrument.

In the ruined remains of the old Södra Säm church, open-air services are held during the summer months, a link to the parish's older place of worship before the churches were combined under one roof in 1824.
