Lysekils kyrka is a prominent landmark on the Bohuslän coast, its tall granite tower long serving as a seamark for vessels approaching the town. Completed in 1901, the church replaced two earlier wooden buildings and preserves some older treasures within its Neo-Gothic interior.

The present cross-shaped church was built between 1899 and 1901 to designs by architect Adrian C. Peterson, and is said to be the largest church in Bohuslän. It stands on high ground in central Lysekil, with a three-aisled nave running north to south, transepts projecting east and west, and a five-sided chancel to the south. A lower five-sided extension surrounds the chancel in the manner of an ambulatory, though it actually houses the sacristy. A tall tower rises at the north end of the nave, flanked by two lower octagonal stair turrets.

The exterior is built of granite quarried locally at Dona, with rough-hewn surfaces contrasted by smoother stonework around windows, doorways and corners, giving the building its distinctive textured appearance.

Inside, the chancel paintings date from 1918–1921, the work of Brocke Blückert, who later restored them himself in 1953. The remaining decoration in the nave was painted between 1925 and 1942 by Albert Eldh, who also provided the designs for the stained-glass windows throughout the church.

Several fittings predate the present building. The pulpit was carved in 1672 by Marcus Jäger the Elder for the German church (Christinae kyrka) in Gothenburg, before being sold to Lysekil in 1797. An older altarpiece from a previous church survives in the west aisle, and a gilded chalice used for communion with the sick dates from the mid-1600s. The granite font was designed in 1900 by engineer Ernst Moritz Arndt and later given a new, lower base in 1960.

The church's earlier wooden predecessor, built in 1796–98, was not demolished but sold and moved to the island of Malmön in 1906, where it still stands as Malmön church. The current organ, built in 1917 by Eskil Lundén and incorporating some pipework from an earlier instrument, was damaged by water ingress in the 2000s but was subsequently repaired and reinaugurated in 2017.
