Stavnäs kyrka, on a low hill above Glafsfjorden in Värmland, was consecrated on 29 October 1705. It replaced an earlier wooden church, probably of medieval origin, and the decision to build in stone had been taken some years before construction began.

The stone church was built between 1699 and 1704, though work such as the rebuilding of the sacristy in 1723 and the raising of the tower spire in 1726 continued for decades afterwards. It has a rectangular nave with a three-sided chancel, a sacristy attached to the north side, and a west tower; the exterior has changed little since. Sources note that a stone floor was laid in 1787 and the roof reclad in slate in 1815, when the roof structure was also lowered to bear the new weight.

Two of the church's most notable objects survive from the earlier medieval building: a wooden crucifix, considered among the oldest in Värmland and attributed to the later 13th century, and a sandstone font, thought to date from the first half of the 13th century, possibly close to 1200.

The altarpiece, carved in 1748 by the sculptor Olof Bruse, was painted the following year by the church painter Hans Georg Schüffner of Åmål, who also decorated the pulpit. Accounts differ slightly on the pulpit's origin: one source credits it to the Värmland sculptor Nils Falk, ready by the time of the 1705 inauguration, while another attributes it to Petter Falk and his son Jonas, dated to 1705 itself — the discrepancy likely reflects confusion between father, son, and workshop rather than two different objects. Conservation work in 1955 uncovered the original polychrome decoration on both altarpiece and pulpit, and the current pews, from the same year, follow the design of the original 18th-century furnishings.

The churchyard is documented from the 17th century and has been extended northward several times since the late 1700s. Nearby stands a parish storehouse probably dating from the early 19th century, and to the east a two-storey timber former rectory from the 18th century.
