In 1808 the cathedral's architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg had designed a new poorhouse church, and the old kiln building was demolished. Mariakyrkan's architecture is strikingly similar to that of the great cathedral. The designation Poorhouse Church slowly disappeared from common usage, and nowadays the old name is heard less and less often.
The present church of Maria was inaugurated under its then name on the second Sunday of Advent, 10 December 1815. It has been called Mariakyrkan since the 1930s.
Right next to the church lies Stampens kyrkogård, which is an amalgamation of the old poorhouse churchyard from the 1700s and Gothenburg's new cemetery. In connection with the city fire of 1802, when Gothenburg Cathedral also burned, the burial ground was moved from what is today Domkyrkoplanen to the cemetery at Stampen.
