High above the western bank of the Ätran river stands Östra Frölunda kyrka, in Svenljunga kommun. A place of worship has stood here since the medieval period, though the present granite building dates from the 1820s and replaced an earlier church on the same site.

The current church was built in 1825–1826, with sources differing slightly on whether the master builder was Per Eriksson of Sandhult or builders from Sandhult parish working to designs by Samuel Enander of the Överintendentsämbetet. Its predecessor was demolished the year before construction began. The building is neoclassical in style, with a semicircular chancel and an octagonal lantern atop the tower. Externally it remains largely unchanged, apart from a sacristy added to the south during a major restoration in 1937–1938 under Figge Wetterqvist.

Among the church's furnishings, the pulpit stands out for its unusual triangular form with concave sides, decorated with two gilded medallions depicting Martin Luther and Gustav Vasa. Both the pulpit and altarpiece were originally made in 1797 by the wood carver Sven Nilsson Morin for the earlier church, then transferred to the new building and reworked in 1826 by Johannes Andersson, a carver from Mjöbäck parish who later became well known in the region.

The chancel ceiling paintings, showing a biblical theme of lilies of the field and birds of the air, were painted by Einar Forseth during the 1930s restoration. The altarpiece is by Bengt Nordenberg, and several carved fittings, including pew ends and number boards, were added in the 1930s by Karl Johansson of Mårdaklev.

The font's sandstone bowl is considerably older than the church itself, thought to have been carved in Västergötland around 1200 in an English style. It has a rare octagonal form, plain and unadorned, and now stands on a modern base. The larger of the church's two bells is of a late medieval type bearing two mysterious capital letters, "S : E", whose meaning remains unexplained; the smaller bell dates from 1796.

The organ was originally built in 1905 by Johan Henrik Thorell, replacing an earlier instrument from 1845, and has since been enlarged and rebuilt more than once, most recently restored in 1985.
