Built in the early 1100s in Romanesque style with an apse and double galleries, Göteve church has changed remarkably little over the centuries. The western part of the nave was extended in the early 1700s, but the interior has otherwise remained largely as it was. The sacristy and porch are thought to date from the 1600s, though the current porch was rebuilt in 1918. A detached bell frame in the churchyard, erected in the 1600s, holds two bells, one of which came from the demolished Skärvum church in 1759.
The interior is often described locally as among the richest and most beautiful in the diocese, and it is easy to see why. Walls and ceiling are painted in a rustic Baroque style, with ceiling decoration from 1791 attributed to Matthias Hasselberg. The gallery front is carved with arcades and painted with figures of the four evangelists and twelve apostles, while the Baroque pulpit, made in 1714 by the sculptor Kihlman of Borås, is adorned with three carved wooden figures.
Among the church's older treasures are a sandstone font from the 1200s, a painted altarpiece from the 1600s depicting the Ascension, and two remarkable medieval carvings: an oak Madonna from the 1400s and a stone figure of a saint from the 1200s, both displayed on the chancel wall above the font.
In the mid-1990s the church suffered a break-in, discovered the following morning when muddy footprints were found leading right across the altar rail. The thieves made off with the medieval apostle figure and the Madonna sculpture, along with wall sconces and altar candlesticks. Remarkably, both carved figures were later recovered and returned to the church, though accounts do not specify exactly when.
The organ, built in 1951 by the Liared organ workshop, has nine stops across two manuals and pedal, with a non-sounding facade from the same period.
In recent years the church has undergone substantial renovation work, including replacement of flooring beneath the pews, rewiring, exterior drainage improvements, and new leaded glazing in the windows, largely aimed at addressing problems with damp.
