Skara domkyrka, dedicated to Saint Mary, is generally regarded as Sweden's oldest cathedral, with roots reaching back to the twelfth century. Standing at the heart of Skara, it combines a Romanesque core with the soaring High Gothic character it acquired during the fourteenth century.

The cathedral traces its origins to Skara stift, said to be Sweden's first diocese, founded in 1014 at nearby Husaby before the bishop's seat moved to Skara in the 1050s. Construction of the first stone church on this site began under Bishop Adalvard the Elder in the 1060s, and building continued in phases over the following centuries: the choir was largely completed around the mid-1200s, while the nave and transept took their present High Gothic form during the first half of the fourteenth century, using sandstone quarried in Västergötland.

The building has suffered repeated damage over the centuries, including fires in the 1500s, 1700s and 1940s, and has been altered and rebuilt many times as a result. Its most drastic transformation came during a sweeping restoration led by Helgo Zettervall between 1886 and 1894, which imposed a unified Gothic-revival appearance, including twin copper-clad spires on the west towers. Much of this nineteenth-century remodelling was later reconsidered: restorations after a 1947 fire, and further work up to 1999, sought to recover older features and expose the medieval fabric, including a rediscovered early crypta beneath the north-east aisle, said to contain a bishop's grave with a chalice and paten dated to around 1100.

Among the cathedral's most distinctive furnishings is the elaborate black marble and white alabaster monument to the nobleman and colonel Erik Soop, completed in Amsterdam in 1637 and moved several times within the church before reaching its present position in the south transept in 1999; his tin coffin, decorated with engraved battle scenes, lies beneath it. Other treasures include altar vessels reportedly dating from the eleventh century and older ecclesiastical textiles, alongside a gilt chalice associated with Soop and a silver christening dish linked to the Hästehufvud family, who also gave the current altarpiece.

The cathedral's 37 stained-glass windows, mostly depicting biblical scenes but also showing Swedish saints such as Birgitta and Helena of Skövde, were created by the artist Bo Beskow with glass craftsman Gustav Ringström between 1945 and 1976; no medieval glass survives. The west towers, altered again in 1809–1810 to a flatter profile, earned the enduring local nickname 'Skara Bôxer' ('Skara trousers') for their supposed resemblance to a pair of breeches, an expression still used today despite later changes to their appearance.
