Hjorteds kyrka stands on the shore of Lake Hjorten in Västervik Municipality, Kalmar County. It is notable among the county's churches for retaining older painted decoration, including a striking painting in the porch dating from the 1730s.

The present stone church was built in the 1770s and consecrated in 1780, dedicated to Queen Sophia Magdalena, consort of Gustav III. It replaced an earlier timber church on the same site, parts of which sources trace back to the medieval period, and possibly as early as the 1200s according to one account. When the old church was demolished, several of its ceiling and wall paintings were transferred to the new building, including a colourful painted ceiling in the porch depicting Christ before Pontius Pilate, dated to around 1731–34.

The church has a single nave with a multi-sided chancel to the east and a tower to the west, built in natural stone and rendered in a pale yellow finish typical of the Gustavian style of the period. A sacristy with a three-sided end lies to the north. The long roof is covered in galvanised steel plate, while the tower is clad in wooden shingles and topped with an octagonal lantern.

Among the furnishings, accounts differ on the font: one source describes a font of Öland limestone dating from the mid-1600s, while another identifies a Gotland-made font from the 1200s, said to have been found buried near the church tower in 1958. A triumphal crucifix is dated to the 1300s, and the altarpiece was donated to the church in 1712, though the altar painting itself, showing Christ speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well, was added later, in 1893, by the artist Elias Erdtman.

Local tradition holds that the church is said to be destined to collapse into Lake Hjorten one Christmas morning, a legend still recounted within the parish. The church underwent exterior renovation in 1998.
