Skölvene kyrka serves the parishes of Skölvene and Norra Säm, in what is now Herrljungabygdens församling in the Diocese of Skara. This modest nineteenth-century church stands on the site of a medieval predecessor and holds one of the region's more striking Romanesque font carvings.

The present church was built in 1843–1844, replacing a medieval stone church that had fallen into serious disrepair despite repairs in 1748 and the addition of a tower in 1823. Sources note that the decision to build a shared church for Skölvene and Norra Säm followed two decades of local disagreement, with the neighbouring parish of Hov reportedly resisting pressure to demolish its own church in favour of using Skölvene's. The old Skölvene church was demolished from 1842, while the abandoned medieval church at Norra Säm was left to decay rather than pulled down.

Architecturally the church is a plain neoclassical building typical of its period, with a nave, a straight-ended chancel to the east and a narrower west tower, plus a small sacristy attached beyond the chancel. The exterior walls are white roughcast, the roof covered in red tile, and the tower carries a copper-clad spire. A restoration in 1932 aimed to preserve the classicist character of the interior.

The most notable object in the church is its font. Sources differ slightly on its age, describing it as either twelfth or thirteenth century, but agree it is an unusually well-preserved sandstone font carved with a rich sequence of figures around the bowl: a winged dragon, a stylised tree, a lion-like beast, Saint Michael fighting the dragon, an unusual depiction of the baptism of Christ, and a tailed, clawed and hoofed devil figure chained to a post. A band around the middle carries a further, Roman Catholic-influenced scene of the blessing of the baptismal water.

Other furnishings include a crucifix on the altar table made by Erik Nilsson of Harplinge, and an altarpiece depicting the Transfiguration, painted in 1877 by Anders Gustaf Ljungström. The church also holds silver plate transferred from Norra Säm's church when it was abandoned.

The west gallery organ, built in 1895 by Johannes Magnusson of Gothenburg, is said to retain its original tonal character largely unaltered, with a plain, undecorated case; it was restored in 2000. A smaller mechanical choir organ was added in 1980.
