Standing on the shore of Lake Siljan, Rättviks kyrka is one of Dalarna's most distinctive churches, with origins dating back to the medieval period and a striking array of timber stables surrounding its churchyard.

The oldest parts of the church date from the 1400s, though sources note that elements may go back to the 1200s. Its present form was reached through a series of extensions during the 1700s, with major work in 1703, 1781 and 1793. Medieval features survive within the building, including a cope, wooden figures and mural paintings that were overpainted in 1682 and only rediscovered in 1950.

The long nave's timber roof trusses have been dated to the 1350s, among the oldest datable timberwork of their kind, with a Gothic truss standing over the chancel. The four-metre triumphal crucifix, possibly a German work from the late 1300s, dominates the interior, while the pulpit, carved in 1636, shows Christ flanked by the four evangelists. The altarpiece dates from the early 1700s and depicts the risen Christ, and the font is carved from limestone dating to 1652. Painted panels on the west, south and north galleries, the work of local artists in the 1700s, depict biblical scenes.

The church tower holds three bells recast and cast between 1593 and 1628, said to be the oldest trio of church bells in Dalarna. The current organ was built in 1963, incorporating pipework salvaged from an 1879 instrument by the firm Åkerman & Lund.

Outside, in a curve to the north-west and north-east of the church, stand around 87 grey timber church stables in two clusters linked by lanes and small open spaces, most dating from the 1700s and 1800s, though one has been tree-ring dated to 1492. These stables once sheltered parishioners' horses on the long journeys to church, which doubled as occasions for parish meetings, news-sharing and social life. Villagers from along the lakeshore also travelled by boat; large rowed boats once carried worshippers across Siljan, and a church boat is still reportedly rowed to services in summer.

The churchyard holds further points of interest, including an unusual early-1500s gravestone known as the Munksten, whose inscription has been linked to a priest killed during unrest connected to Gustav Vasa's uprising in 1520–21. A large memorial stone near the shore, raised in 1893, commemorates Gustav Vasa's first address to the men of Dalarna, said to have taken place at the church in 1520, though the inscribed historical narrative reflects a later, patriotic retelling rather than a contemporary record.
