Vrena kyrka is a small parish church in Södermanland, within Strängnäs diocese, thought to have been built around the mid-1200s. Its unassuming exterior conceals a striking painted vault and a modest but interesting history of alteration and restoration.

The church is believed to date from the mid-thirteenth century, with the sacristy and porch added at later, unspecified dates. Its plan and construction are typical of small rural medieval churches in the region, built to serve a local farming community.

The interior originally had a timber barrel vault. Towards the end of the 1400s this was replaced with two star-shaped brick vaults, supported on sturdy brick pillars, giving the ceiling its present, more elaborate appearance. Visitors often notice the painted chancel vault, whose colourful decoration has been likened to a patterned tent.

In the chancel are wall paintings dating from the early 1600s, attributed to an unknown artist and said to commemorate a family's five children who died in an outbreak of plague. The paintings depict Christ and the apostles. The chancel window, which was partly bricked up during the nineteenth century, was restored to its original appearance in 1961.

Among the fittings is a pulpit believed to have been made in 1664 for the church at Bettna. When Bettna acquired a new pulpit in 1765, a gift from Carl Gustav Tessin of Åkerö, the older pulpit was passed to Vrena, with the widowed countess Horn of the Tärnö estate in Vrena covering half the cost.

The church's organ history reflects a common Swedish pattern of replacement and relocation: an 1863 instrument by Erik Adolf Setterquist was later moved elsewhere, and the present mechanical organ was built in 1961 by the Gustaf Hagström workshop of Härnösand.
