Information we use and why
Visiting the website and using the map
Delivering pages and map content requires our servers to receive technical information, including your IP address and the resources requested. Server logs can also contain the request date and time, browser information, referring page and response status. We use these details to deliver the site, investigate faults, detect abusive traffic and protect the service.
Our map loads tiles and map fonts from our map service at tiles.worldclassmaps.com. The map server receives connection and request details when these resources load. Map requests identify the areas displayed. The map does not request your device’s GPS location.
The legal basis for this processing is our legitimate interest in providing a functioning website and protecting it against faults, unauthorised access and abuse.
Contacting us
If you email us or use our contact form, we use the contact details, message and any attachments you provide to respond and deal with your enquiry or correction. Providing this information is voluntary, but we need a way to contact you if you want a reply. Please do not send unnecessary sensitive information.
We rely on our legitimate interest in responding to enquiries and maintaining accurate church information. We do not add contact-form users or email correspondents to our newsletter automatically.
Contact-form delivery and storage: [form service, where submissions are stored, and any anti-spam service and the information it receives]. Email correspondence is handled through Zoho Mail.
Google Analytics
With your consent, we use Google Analytics 4, provided by Google, to understand which pages visitors use and how they navigate the site. This helps us identify useful content and improve navigation. Our legal basis for this processing is your consent.
Google Analytics uses cookies and similar identifiers to measure website activity. Information can include pages viewed, interaction events, referring websites, browser and device information, and approximate location. Your browser sends technical information to Google when Analytics runs.
Google states that GA4 uses IP addresses at collection time to determine approximate location and then discards them before logging or storing them. This does not mean that all Analytics information is anonymous. See Google’s explanation of regional data collection.
Google Analytics runs only after you choose to allow analytics. You can refuse it or withdraw consent through Cookie settings without losing access to the guide. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal. We do not send the contents of your contact messages to Google Analytics.
For information about Google’s processing, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and Google’s Privacy Policy.
People mentioned or credited in the guide
Our source material and published guides can contain information about living people, such as professional names, roles, creator credits and public business contact details. Sources can include Svenska kyrkan’s Platser service, parishes, archives, image contributors and information supplied directly to us. Relevant sources and credits are identified on the church page or individual item.
We use necessary information to document the buildings accurately, identify sources and credit contributors. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in producing an attributable heritage guide, balanced against the interests and rights of the people concerned. We agree publication permissions separately where needed. Contact us if information about you is incorrect or you have a privacy concern.
The website has no public comments section.
Cookies and similar technologies
Our cookie information explains which cookies and similar technologies are used, their purposes, providers and storage periods. Strictly necessary technologies support functions such as keeping your cookie choice. Optional technologies require your consent before they are used.
Use Cookie settings in the footer to accept or reject optional categories or change an earlier choice. Rejecting optional cookies does not prevent access to the church directory. See Cookie information for the current details.
Service providers and international processing
We use service providers for hosting, email and the other functions described above. They receive the information needed to provide their services. Access on our side is limited to people who need it for their work. We may also disclose information where necessary to comply with a legal obligation or establish, exercise or defend a legal claim.
- Website hosting: DigitalOcean, with the website server in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
- Map hosting: our service at tiles.worldclassmaps.com, hosted by DigitalOcean, with the website server in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Email: Zoho Mail, using zoho.eu servers
- Analytics: Google Analytics 4 (Google).
- Cookie preference management: CookieYes, provided by CookieYes Limited. CookieYes stores a cookie in your browser to remember your preferences. If its cloud consent logging is enabled, consent records are also sent to and stored by CookieYes. These include a consent identifier, your choices, the date and time, and a masked IP address.
How long we keep information
We keep personal information only for as long as needed. Contact messages are kept while we handle your enquiry and any necessary follow-up. Technical logs help us troubleshoot problems and protect the website. Consent records document your cookie choices.
Information is deleted or anonymised when no longer needed, unless we must retain it for legal reasons. Google Analytics and CookieYes records follow their configured retention settings. Cookie lifetimes are listed in our Cookie information. Deleted information may remain in backups until those backups are replaced.
Necessary source credits and contribution-permission records are kept while we use the relevant material and for any justified period needed to resolve a rights dispute. We review whether those records remain necessary. Information relating to an active dispute or a legal obligation may need to be retained longer than the ordinary period; we limit that retention to what is needed for that purpose.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, you can request access to your personal data, correction, erasure, restriction of processing and a portable copy of qualifying data. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests and withdraw consent where processing relies on consent. These rights are subject to the conditions and exceptions in data-protection law.
Contact info@churchesinsweden.com to make a request. We may need proportionate information to verify your identity. We normally respond within one month; if a lawful extension is needed, we will explain it within that month.
You can complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection, Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY), or another competent supervisory authority. You do not have to contact us before making a complaint.
We do not use your personal data for automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Changes and external websites
We update this policy when our processing changes. The date at the top identifies the current version. Where a change needs fresh consent, updating this page alone does not provide that consent.
Links to churches, archives and other websites lead to services with their own privacy practices. This policy covers Churches in Sweden, not those external websites.
