Mikaelskyrkan: The church, built in sand-coloured brick, was designed by architect Bent Jörgen Jörgensen from Växjö. It is built on three levels and houses, in addition to the church hall, a parish hall, activity premises, staff offices and a preschool. The church, which seats 170 people, was inaugurated in 1976.

The site where Mikaelskyrkan stands today has long been a church site. Already in the 13th century a church stood here, which was then Askim parish's only church, within what are today Mikaelskyrkan's churchyard walls. But on 12 November 1876, in the middle of an ongoing service, the church was destroyed by fire. It was then decided to build a new church in a more central location, which became the church we today call Askim kyrka.

It would take exactly 100 years before the area known as Kyrkåsen had a church again, Mikaelskyrkan. The remains of the 13th-century church can still be seen in the form of central aisle stones in the churchyard.

The church

The church, built in sand-coloured brick, was designed by architect Bent Jörgen Jörgensen from Växjö. It is built on three levels and houses, in addition to the church hall, a parish hall, staff offices and a preschool. The church, which seats 170 people, was inaugurated in 1976.

The altar

The altar, made of polished red-grey granite, is placed on a granite platform surrounded by eight brass stands forming an altar rail.

The altarpiece

The altarpiece was composed and executed by Gunilla Sjögren in 1977. The piece is in mixed media with woven-in decoration in clear colours depicting a landscape with fields, forests, sea and mountains, as well as sun and moon.

Decoration

Mikaelskyrkan has become known as an art-inspired church. At least once a year, artists from Askim exhibit their works here. Some of the paintings are owned by the parish.

Furnishings

All the furnishings are in keeping with the style and with well-matched colours. There is an ambo for scripture readings, a marble font decorated with three fish, church pews upholstered in their original colour with the possibility of fitting pew candles for festive occasions, a candle stand with memorial candles, and tall candlesticks flanking the cross.
