The church was built to designs by the architectural partnership Höjer & Ljungqvist and consecrated on 24 March 1963, a date chosen because it fell on the Feast of the Annunciation. This connection to the Virgin Mary later inspired a change of name: originally known simply as Johannelund Church, it was renamed Sankta Maria i Johannelund in 2005.
Architecturally, the building is notable for its oval, enclosing plan, which stands out against the rectilinear housing that now surrounds it. The layout runs east to west, with a straight-ended chancel to the east, a porch to the west and a sacristy to the north.
The interior was shaped in close collaboration with the artist Erik Höglund, whose influence is felt throughout. The inner walls are built of yellow brick, carved and decorated with symbols and figures in relief designed by Höglund, while the south wall holds a large window of cast crystal glass set in concrete blocks, rising from floor to ceiling. Textile work by Sten Kauppi contributes further to what is described as a strongly unified interior scheme. Furnishings include a limestone font, a pine pulpit and a limestone altar with a fluted-edged slab.//comment removed for length control (placeholder not shown)
