Lummelunda kyrka stands on the Gotland plain just north of Visby, reached by turning off Route 149. Built of limestone in the Middle Ages, it is a modest but architecturally telling parish church with a long and layered building history.

The church's oldest parts, the Romanesque nave and west tower, date from around 1200, when a smaller chancel, possibly with an apse, stood in the east. A mid-14th-century plan to rebuild and enlarge the whole church was only partly realised: the present, larger Gothic chancel with its north sacristy is the result. The sacristy's exact age is uncertain, first mentioned in a document of 1739, while the tower spire dates from 1636.

The two main building phases are clearly visible in the south doorways: the nave's rounded Romanesque portal contrasts with the chancel's pointed, richly moulded Gothic doorway with carved capitals and a gable. The nave windows were altered during the 17th and 19th centuries, but the group of three windows in the chancel's east wall is original to its medieval build.

Inside, the earliest recorded change came in the late 13th century, when the tower arch was widened and decorated with ornamental painting still visible today. A more recent restoration, carried out by the architect Åke Porne in 1960–61, removed a west gallery and relocated the font beneath the tower arch, uncovering its old painted decoration in the process. At the same time the nave received an angled concrete ceiling, later given a cloud motif by the artist Harald Norrby in 1989, replacing a plain wooden ceiling that had previously obscured the pointed chancel arch. The chancel itself is covered by a tent vault, whose curved diagonals give it an eight-sided form. Medieval wall paintings from the 15th century survive in both nave and chancel, with some traces also remaining of a more elaborate 18th-century decorative scheme.

Among the furnishings, a 13th-century font stands beneath the tower arch, alongside a wooden sculpture of about 1500. The altarpiece, dated 1663, depicts the institution of the Eucharist, and the 1664 pulpit is painted with figures of the four evangelists. The church's organ has an interesting history: an earlier five-stop instrument installed in 1961 was later moved elsewhere, and the current organ was built in 1989 by Septima Orgel AB of Umeå.

Behind the church lies a pleasant churchyard meadow, worth a visit in its own right on a fine day.
