Björskogs kyrka stands on a hilltop on the edge of Valskog in Västmanland, its history stretching back to around 1200. Part of a defensive tower survives from the medieval period, making it one of the older church buildings in the district.

The church's oldest surviving element is the tower, whose medieval masonry and narrow internal stairs remain largely intact at the lower levels. Parts of the roof timbers are also thought to date from the 1400s. A church is recorded as having stood here from around 1200, with the building gradually enlarged during the later medieval period, when the porch was absorbed into a larger structure.

The tower was rebuilt in 1649 with a tall tapering spire, which was damaged by a lightning strike in 1693 and subsequently repaired. A more thorough transformation followed plans drawn up in 1797 by Carl Fredrik Sundvall, completed by 1802; this work gave the tower a bell storey (the bells having previously hung in a separate wooden bell-frame, since demolished) and added the lantern seen today. Further changes to the façades, flooring and pews took place in the early twentieth century and again in 1955, when a baptismal area was created inside.

The wide, open interior is often likened to a Roman basilica. Its three aisles are divided by substantial pillars that originally formed the walls of an earlier church built in the 1300s, which burned down towards the end of the 1600s.

Among the furnishings is an eighteenth-century altarpiece featuring a bronzed wooden crucifix set within four columns, along with several brass chandeliers dating from the 1500s to 1700s. A font with a base from the 1300s stands on the south side of the chancel. A wine jug from 1637 carries an unusual warning inscription cursing anyone who removes it from the church, and a fourteenth-century incense censer, discovered beneath the church floor during a renovation, now hangs beside the altar.

The church has had a succession of organs since one was first mentioned in 1570. The present instrument, built in 1914 and later modified, retains the case front from an organ installed in 1737 by the Stockholm organ builder Olof Hedlund.
