Gammalstorps kyrka stands on a low hill near Sölvesborg in Blekinge, on ground once surrounded by the waters of a now-drained lake. It replaced an earlier wooden church and, according to local tradition, an even older religious site.

The present church was built between 1790 and 1793, funded by a parish with very limited means, so builders reportedly had to negotiate cheaper materials to make the budget stretch. Services began the year after construction started, though the building was not formally consecrated until the following year. The tower was not completed until 1823, and the church's exterior has remained largely unchanged since.

The site itself has an older history. It sits on what was once an island, Kyrkön, in a navigable strait called Vesan, now drained and farmed. A local legend tells of a Viking fleet wintering here, adopting Christianity, and building the district's first church as early as the 1100s — a colourful story that should be treated as tradition rather than established fact.

Parts of the older medieval church survive within the current structure: the west and south walls are said to date from that earlier building, physically linking today's church to its predecessor, which some accounts describe as originating as a convent.

Among the furnishings, visitors may find a fifteenth-century wooden sculpture from the southern Netherlands depicting a bishop or abbot figure, and an octagonal oak font donated in 1637, later complemented by a silver christening bowl given in 1828. The pulpit, made in 1825, incorporates older carved elements salvaged from a seventeenth-century predecessor. An altarpiece acquired from Bäckaskog in 1772 was later joined by a second one sourced from Näsum in 1795.

The church's organ has its own story of loss and renewal: an 1893 instrument was destroyed by fire in 1946, and a new pneumatic organ was installed in 1948.
