In the early 14th century, Halmstad was moved closer to the coast. It was then that construction began on S:t Nikolai kyrka, named after the patron saint of seafarers. The church was completed towards the end of the 15th century.

The church contains 8 stained glass windows in the chancel surround, created by the artist Einar Forseth between 1953 and 1978. In addition, the church has 2 round stained glass windows to the north and south of the central aisle, created by the Halmstad artist Erik Olsson. The last of the church's 11 painted windows is found in the baptism and wedding chapel and was created by Einar Forseth.
