In terms of church organisation, it belongs to Ljungskile parish, but since the intention was that it should also serve the residents of Hjärtum parish in the mountain district (fjällbygden), Hjärtum parish (Lilla Edet pastorate) has supported its operation in various ways over many years.
It was in the early 1900s that the need for a chapel of its own was recognised, and by 1918 3,000 kronor had been collected. After a further four years, the capital had grown to 12,500 kronor, and with the promise of a loan, work began. In 1924 the Fjällbygdens kapell foundation was established, and in 1926 the chapel stood finished – built by the local population. The plot for the chapel and, later, the vicarage was donated by Karl and Tekla Johansson.
In 1998 the chapel was renovated, and a gathering room for church coffee, café and other gatherings was added at that time.
When the chapel was built, the priest had to rent lodgings at the old people's home, but a vicarage was later built near the chapel. Today there is no resident priest; instead, services are led by priests and musicians from Hjärtum and Västerlanda, and occasional services (such as funerals and baptisms) are conducted by staff from Ljungskile parish.
The rhythm of the chapel is set by the services held once a month. In January, on Epiphany (trettondag jul), Christmas songs are sung and a traditional Christmas play is performed. The nativity scene, made on site, is well worth seeing. Ahead of Midsummer, the chapel is decorated with birch branches and flowers. The Midsummer's Eve service begins inside the chapel late in the evening and ends with the final hymn being sung outside.
In summer, a summer café is also held, providing an occasion for conversation about local history and for viewing the old graves. On the first Sunday of Advent, an auction is held, hosted by the sewing circle (syförening), with plenty of bread for sale.
