The oldest parts of the stone church probably date from the 13th century, when it consisted of a nave with a narrower, straight-ended chancel and a Romanesque doorway on the south wall. Little of this earliest fabric is now visible, though the core of the nave survives within the later building.
By the mid-18th century the congregation found the church too cramped and dark. In 1754, under master builder Ferner, it was extended eastward and given a wooden barrel vault, with a new sacristy added the same year. Between 1772 and 1774 master mason Olof Murmästare built the present tower, with its curved cap, lantern and weathervane cockerel, giving the church broadly the external appearance it retains today. The interior ceiling paintings also date from this mid-18th-century phase.
Inside, the large altarpiece in the chancel was painted by Pehr Hörberg, a prolific and well-regarded Swedish church painter, and depicts the Nativity and the adoration of the shepherds; it was originally made for Skärstad church in 1814 before coming to Kisa. The pulpit, carved in 1762 by Jonas Berggren of Målilla, shows reliefs of Christ's baptism, the Virgin and Child, and Christ in Gethsemane, and was a gift from a local noble widow. An earlier 17th-century pulpit and altarpiece are recorded in historical descriptions but no longer survive in the church.
Among the furnishings are a chasuble and altar frontal linked to the local von Goltz and Grubbe families, dated to the mid-18th century, and a chandelier from 1738. A memorial tablet to the composer Joachim Georg Nicolas Eggert, born in 1779, was placed in the porch in 1959. The three church bells were cast in the 18th century by Norrköping founders, with the largest bearing depictions of Christ and the apostles.
The church has had a series of organs, beginning with a mid-17th-century instrument and a notable 18th-century organ by Cahman, later sold on. The current organ, built behind the retained 18th-century Wistenius case, incorporates older components and was completed in 1975, with later restoration work in the early 2000s.
