The church's oldest surviving part is the sacristy, thought to date from the 1200s or 1300s and originally belonging to an earlier wooden church on the site. The nave was probably built during the 1300s, while the tower was added in the early 1400s and is said to have doubled as a defensive structure for the local community, useful in times of unrest. The tower gained its present appearance in 1783.
Towards the end of the 1400s a porch was added and the interior was given brick vaulting. It was onto these new vaults, sometime in the 1470s or 1480s, that Albertus Pictor and his workshop painted biblical scenes across the church, with his signature said to survive above the entrance to the sacristy. In 1665 new vaults were built in the nave and chancel, and the paintings on the earlier vaulting were lost, likely whitewashed over at that time. The surviving medieval paintings were uncovered again in 1877, giving today's visitors a rare glimpse of this decorative scheme.
Among the church's furnishings, the sandstone font is the oldest object, dating from the 1200s. It was moved into the sacristy in the 1700s and replaced by a simpler font in the church itself, before being returned to the main body of the church in 1916. The altar cabinet, made in the 1460s, is decorated with images of saints and apostles.
The pulpit, carved from pear wood in the 1600s, is said to have been a gift from Baron Åke Henriksson Tott of nearby Ekolsund Castle. It is adorned with figurative carvings, including the Tott family's coat of arms on its canopy, and figures of Christ and the four evangelists on the pulpit basket, with the stairway decorated with figures of the apostles Peter, Paul and James. A brass chandelier hanging in the church is said to have been donated in 1678 by Sten Nilsson Bielke and his wife. A fragment of a rune stone is kept in the porch.
The present organ was built in 1937 by Bo Wedrup of Uppsala, replacing earlier instruments from 1813 and 1866; the 1866 organ's façade had been designed by the architect Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander.
