Hacksta kyrka stands amid open farmland some 25 kilometres south-east of Enköping, in Trögden. Its long nave dates back to the 1200s, and the building was extended and altered over subsequent centuries, right up to the late 1600s.

The church's core is a 13th-century nave with a narrower, straight-ended chancel of the same period, built of plastered stone under a shingled roof. A sacristy was added to the north at an uncertain later date, and a late medieval porch stands to the south, its brick blind arcading visible above the south doorway. The medieval sacristy was demolished in 1762 and rebuilt on the same spot. Around 1300 the chancel received a ribbed vault decorated with wall paintings, and the nave's star vaults, dating from roughly 1470 to 1490, were similarly painted soon after completion.

The interior seen today owes much to a 1927 restoration, which removed the organ gallery, adjusted the 1680s pew arrangement and uncovered a painted drapery motif around the altar. The chancel window was bricked up at that time and a 1934 painting by Axel Wallert placed in its position; a further restoration in 1981 reopened the window and moved the altarpiece. During this later work, medieval wall paintings in the nave, long hidden under plaster, were rediscovered and conserved.

In the chancel stand two medieval sculptures surviving from an altar cabinet of North German type, though thought to have been made in Sweden in the later 1400s. They depict the Descent from the Cross and a female saint, remnants of a larger devotional ensemble.

The pulpit dates from 1680, remodelled in 1822, while the enclosed pews were installed in 1769, replacing earlier seating from 1664. The organ case, standing on a low platform at the west end of the nave, belongs to an instrument built in 1762 by Lars Kinström and Jacob Westervik; the original mechanism was later replaced, then restored again in 2002, so that both case and organ now again date from 1762.

Northeast of the church stands a free-standing bell tower, its timber cladding concealing a frame that may itself be medieval. The smaller of its bells is thought to have been cast in 1522, and the tower's construction may be roughly contemporary with it.
