Hilleshögs kyrka is a small medieval church standing on a wooded hill above the water on the island of Färingsö, near Lake Mälaren. Modest in scale, it holds a surprising number of curiosities for visitors interested in early Swedish church architecture and furnishings.

The church was built during the later part of the 12th century and belongs to an early Romanesque type of church with a slender west tower, a design that in Uppland is said to originate with S:t Pers kyrka in Sigtuna. The original plan survives largely intact, though a sacristy was added to the north side of the chancel in the 13th or 14th century (sources differ slightly on the exact period) and a porch was added to the south in the 15th century.

The tower itself is tall and narrow, and originally had paired, slim sound openings; a pair can still be seen on the eastern side, facing the nave. Similar openings on the south and west sides were lost when today's larger sound openings were created in 1785, the year the bells were moved into the tower from an earlier freestanding wooden bell-stapel that had stood to the south of the church.

Inside, the limestone font dates from the late 13th century, and the pulpit on the north wall was made in 1748, reached by a stair leading from the sacristy. Two triumphal crucifixes survive from the medieval period: one, in the porch, dates from the first half of the 13th century, and another, on the north wall, from the first half of the 15th century; in both cases the crosses themselves are modern replacements. The church is also said to house one of the oldest depictions of Saint Birgitta in Sweden, though details of this image are not given in the sources.

Wall paintings from the end of the 13th century decorate the interior. The church's small mechanical organ was built in 1773 by Jonas Ekengren of Stockholm, the church's first organ, and was restored in 1961; it is sometimes described as one of the smallest organs in any Swedish church, an intriguing detail for visitors even without technical specification.
