Skedevi kyrka stands beside the shores of Lake Tisnaren in Östergötland, its origins reaching back to the early Middle Ages. Though modest in setting, the building has been reshaped repeatedly over the centuries, giving it a layered history that rewards a closer look.

The earliest known church on this site was a timber building dating from the beginning of the 1200s. Later, probably towards the end of the 1400s, a stone church was constructed around the existing wooden structure, which is said to have remained in use throughout the building work. A sacristy was added to the north side of the chancel and a porch to the south, though the new stone church had no tower.

In the second half of the 1600s a new three-sided chancel was built. Between 1775 and 1777 a west tower was added, and it has remained largely unchanged since. By the early 1800s the parish had grown too large for the existing building, prompting a substantial rebuilding between 1803 and 1807 to designs attributed to the architect Olof Tempelman. The seventeenth-century chancel was demolished and transepts were added to the north and south, along with a new neoclassical chancel section and a lantern over the crossing. This work gave the church the Gustavian character it retains today.

Inside, the pulpit on the north side of the nave was donated to the church in 1681, while a brass font, given in 1701, stands in the south transept. The altarpiece dates from a donation in 1716. An earlier altar painting depicting the Last Supper, now displayed in the north transept, was painted in 1844 by Gustaf Adolf Engman.

The church has had a succession of organs, the earliest recorded in 1706, with later instruments built in 1754, 1826 and 1916. The current organ, built in 1975, retains the façade of its 1826 predecessor, offering a visible link between the instrument's older and newer history.
