Katrinebergs kapell stands on a rise a kilometre north of the border between Gästrikland and Hälsingland, deep in the Bollnäs finnskog (forest settled by Finnish migrants). It is the oldest of the chapels within the Bollnäs-Rengsjö parish.

The chapel's origins lie with the Katrineberg ironworks, established in 1776. An earlier chapel was built here around 1783 to serve the small industrial community, which then lay within Hanebo parish before being transferred to Bollnäs parish in 1848.

That original building eventually fell into disrepair, and a new chapel was constructed nearby, consecrated in 1892. It is this later building that visitors see today, standing as a modest but historically resonant marker of the finnskog settlements and the working life once centred on the ironworks.

For many years the chapel had no resident clergy of its own: services were conducted by the priest based at Gruvberget, who also served the nearby Annefors chapel, reflecting the scattered, rural character of church life in this forested border region.

The present organ dates from 1892 and was built by Lars Östlin of Nordanåsbo, Ockelbo, replacing an earlier instrument from the 1850s. It remains a mechanical organ typical of small rural chapels of its period.
