Sturkö kyrka, the largest church in the Blekinge archipelago, stands on the island of Sturkö and serves Sturkö parish together with Tjurkö church. It replaced a medieval church dedicated to Saint Gertrude, patron saint of travellers and seafarers.

A medieval offering church once stood here, dedicated to Saint Gertrude of Nivelles. It was a modest rectangular building of grey stone measuring only about 9 by 13 metres, without a tower, and had a timber porch thought to date from the 1600s. A bell tower was added around the 1650s, and its bell, cast in 1655, survived to be rehung in the present church's tower. The old church is remembered today through an oil painting by the schoolteacher Karl Jacob Nilsson, and through a model of the church and bell tower made by his son Gunnar Nilsson; both are kept inside the present building.

The medieval church was demolished in 1878 when the current building, designed by the architect Johan Adolf Hawerman, was completed and consecrated on 13 October that year. It has a rectangular nave with a narrower chancel and apse to the east, and a west tower with a projecting stair turret. Built mainly of grey stone with brick detailing, it has rendered walls, round-arched windows, and a saddle roof over the nave and chancel, while the three-sided apse carries a hipped roof. The tower is topped with a spire. Inside, the nave has a broken, coffered timber ceiling, the chancel is barrel-vaulted, and the apse—housing the sacristy behind a screen—has a domed vault.

Several furnishings were carried over from the medieval church, including an altar cabinet and altarpiece said to date from the 1400s and 1700s (sources differ on the exact dating), along with chandeliers and four brass candlesticks from the 1600s and 1700s. In the porch stands an iron-clad offertory chest bought in 1709, which is recorded as having been stolen on two occasions; it was traditionally secured with four keys held by churchwardens and the parish priest. The altar is decorated with a smaller copy of Bertel Thorvaldsen's figure of Christ, the original of which stands in Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen.

The church underwent an interior restoration in 1961, when the pews were remodelled and a new floor laid, and again in 1998, when lighting was renewed, the number of pews reduced to make room for a devotional room and space for the church choir, and new altar textiles were donated by the parish's needlework circle.

The present organ was built in 1965–66 by Mårtensson's organ workshop, with a case designed by Torsten Leon-Nilson; it replaced an earlier four-stop organ built in 1869 by Andreas Åbergh, which had been moved here from another Blekinge church in the late 1800s.
