Holmöns kyrka stands on the island of Holmön in the Norra Kvarken strait, a wooden church that has become a year-round gathering place for islanders and summer visitors, and a familiar setting for the christenings, weddings and funerals of those with roots on Holmön.

Holmön's first church, named Helena Elisabeth and built in 1802, no longer stands on the island; it was later reconstructed at the Gammlia open-air museum in Umeå. South of the present church lies a disused burial ground, Örskärskyrkogården, a reminder of the island's older churchyard.

The current church was built in 1891 to designs by Fritz Eckert. It is a timber long-nave church with an attached sacristy to the east and a gable tower to the west. The style is broadly neo-Gothic with neo-Classical touches, most noticeable in the decorative woodwork on the gables and in the small porch shelter above the main west entrance. Both the chancel and the nave are covered by panelled wooden ceilings, with the nave retaining an open timber roof structure.

A thorough renovation took place in 1933 under Kjell Wretling, during which the chancel window was closed up and a new altarpiece, painted by Gerda Höglund, was installed. The gallery was rebuilt in 1959, and further renovation work followed in 1967, 1979 and 1984.

The pulpit and pews are original to the 1891 building, giving the interior a sense of continuity despite later changes. The lighting fixtures date from the 1950s, and the church has an eight-stop organ built by the Tostared organ workshop around the same period.

For many who grew up on Holmön or have family connections there, the church remains a focal point for returning to mark life's major moments, reflecting the island's close-knit character and its pull on those who leave.
