Consecrated 1641

Tyresö church is built of brick made in Tyresö and was erected during Sweden's Age of Greatness by Gabriel Oxenstierna in 1638-1640, near Tyresö slott (Tyresö Castle). The first service held in the church was the funeral of the builder Gabriel Oxenstierna himself, in 1641. Tyresö church is a listed ecclesiastical heritage site.

Hall church in red brick

Tyresö church is a so-called hall church, built of red brick. Tall, pointed-arch windows let in plenty of light, which is reflected off the white walls. The building is a mixture of late Gothic and Renaissance styles, with the tower to the west. The master mason was Hans Ferster.

When the church tower burned

In 1740 the tower and church roof burned, and due to a lack of financial means the spire was not rebuilt; to this day the tower has a low, pyramid-shaped roof.

The Oxenstierna burial vault

The burial vault, located beneath the chancel, contains coffins with the remains of Gabriel Oxenstierna, his first wife Märta Bielke, their son Gustav and his wife Maria Sofia de la Gardie, and Gustava Oxenstierna, daughter of the aforementioned, and her husband Kristoffer Gyllenstierna. The coffins are made of copper or pewter and have been covered in fine textiles.

A popular wedding church with beautiful surroundings

Tyresö church is one of Sweden's most popular churches for weddings. It has an idyllic setting right by Tyresö slott and its castle park, surrounded by beautiful nature. Both the Prince's Villa (Prinsvillan) and Stockholm's Pilgrim Centre are a stone's throw from the church.

The pews seat 160 people.
