Alnö kyrka stands on the island of Alnön near Sundsvall, its red-brick neo-Gothic tower a familiar landmark. Completed in 1896 to a design by the architect Ferdinand Boberg, it replaced an earlier wooden church destroyed by fire, and today serves the parish of Alnö.

The site has a long history of church-building. A wooden church erected in 1861–62 to replace an older building burned down in May 1888, apparently after embers carried by strong winds ignited its shingle roof; the church was destroyed within an hour, with only its more recent parish records saved. Work on the present brick church began on the same site in 1893, and it was consecrated in November 1896. In 1936 it underwent a thorough restoration, during which an extension was added to the north side.

The altarpiece is a reproduction of the one in Molde Church in Norway, said to have been donated by a benefactor born in that Norwegian town. Between 1961 and 1962 the church acquired eleven sculptures by Marcus Lövblad, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments and from the history of the Church of Sweden.

The most celebrated object here is the so-called Alnö font, a baptismal font carved from pine and spruce and thought to date from the 12th or 13th century. It is regarded as one of Europe's outstanding medieval artefacts, its carved decoration read as depicting the struggle between Old Norse belief and Christianity, underlining the significance of baptism. The font has twice left the island: it was exhibited at the Louvre in Paris in 1963 and in Uppsala the following year.

An earlier organ, built around 1878, was lost in the 1888 fire. Its replacement, built by E. A. Setterquist & Son of Örebro and inaugurated in November 1896, was substantially restored in 2010 to return it closer to its original condition after earlier alterations.

The church seats around 400 people, giving some sense of the scale of the building that replaced its more modest predecessors.
