Kjula kyrka is the main church of Kafjärden parish, standing near Eskilstuna in Södermanland. Its long architectural history stretches from an early medieval timber building to the substantial stone church visitors see today, shaped by centuries of alteration.

The earliest church on this site is thought to have been a timber structure, possibly a stave church, dating from the eleventh century. This was replaced in the twelfth century by a grey stone church built in the Romanesque style, and the nave and tower from that period survive within the present building. Around the end of the thirteenth or start of the fourteenth century the church was extended eastward, with the original chancel removed and a new one built, possibly accompanied by a sacristy to its north. In the fifteenth century the interior received brick vaulting and a porch was added on the nave's south side.

Further changes followed in the centuries after: windows were enlarged in 1643, a timber extension was added to the south side in 1735, and in 1772 the tower's spire was replaced with a new turret fitted with louvred openings, at which point the bells were moved into the tower itself, replacing an older freestanding bell frame from 1637.

The most significant transformation came in 1798, when north and south transepts were added, giving the church the cross-shaped layout still visible today. This extensive rebuilding saw the porch, sacristy and 1735 extension demolished, along with parts of the nave's north and south walls, while the medieval brick vaulting was replaced with whitewashed timber barrel vaults. A further reordering in 1875 added a sacristy in the north transept and involved removing the chancel and relocating the pulpit to its current position on the transept's east wall.

Among the furnishings, the font base dates from the twelfth century, though the bowl and copper basin it now carries are modern, from 1955. The altar holds a crucifix from the early eighteenth century, and there is a medieval censer and a communion vessel with a base from the early sixteenth century, both notable survivals from the church's earlier life.

The church has had a succession of organs, reflecting its long musical history: an instrument of unknown origin was moved here in 1792, followed by new organs in 1806 and 1876, before the present mechanical organ of eighteen stops was built in 1974 by Walter Thür Orgelbyggen of Torshälla. A smaller mechanical chancel organ built by the same firm in 1970 was later sold, in 1984, to Hammarby church.
