Heds kyrka

Heds kyrka is a parish church in the Diocese of Västerås, Sweden, standing on a hillside with wide views over the surrounding countryside. Built in the late 18th century, it remains in regular use for worship and reflects several phases of rebuilding after storm damage and later restoration.

The first chapel on this site was a wooden structure raised in 1593. It was replaced in the 1680s by a cross-shaped timber church built up on Hedåsen, to the south of the present building. The stone church seen today was begun in 1789 and consecrated later that year, although still unfinished; the tower itself was not completed until 1791–92, when it was given a tall, copper-clad spire.

That original spire was short-lived. A lightning strike in 1828 destroyed both the spire and the bell storey above the tower. When the tower was rebuilt in 1830–31, it was given the lower spire that still crowns the church today, a visible reminder of the fire.

The interior has been reworked more than once. A thorough restoration in 1905, overseen by the architect Rudolf Arborelius, introduced new mahogany pews, a new floor, central heating and brighter, lighter decorative painting, replacing the older enclosed box pews with open seating. A later renovation in 1949–50, led by architect Sven A. Söderholm, deliberately sought to recreate the character of the 1790s interior, and the enclosed pew arrangement was reinstated at that time.

Among the furnishings, the pulpit was donated to the church in 1798, and the font and its silver christening bowl were given in 1939. The altarpiece and its altar screen were gifts from the Lorichs family of nearby Bernshammar. Visitors interested in textiles may note a chasuble said to date from the 14th century, a rare survival among the church's furnishings.

The organ has its own history of change: it was installed in 1850 by the organ builders Blomquist & Lindgren, following the same design as the organ in Hjälsta church, and was later rebuilt in 1905 and again in 1949–50, though its original facade has been retained throughout.
