The oldest parts of the church, the nave from the chancel arch to the gallery, are thought on dendrochronological evidence to date from as early as the 1130s, though an older account in the Västgötalag's list of bishops attributes the building to Bishop Bengt the Good, which would place it after 1150. The original chancel was demolished in the mid-to-late 13th century and replaced, probably in the 1290s, by the present chancel in an early Gothic style echoing the choir designs of Skara Cathedral and Varnhem Abbey church. The sandstone south portal, with its interlace ornament, is attributed to the so-called Ottravad Master.
During the 15th century the nave was given cross vaults decorated with painted scenes based on German engravings. These were later painted over, and only rediscovered during a thorough restoration in 1943–1944 led by architect Axel Forssén. A sacristy was added in the 17th century, said to have served as a burial chapel, and in the 18th century the church gained a small timber tower with a dragon-topped spire, the nave was lengthened westward, and in 1748 a rococo gallery for the local gentry was installed.
The survival of so many older treasures here is attributed to the wealth of noble families, based at the nearby estates of Fagranäs and Vädersholm, who supported the parish through the medieval period. Among the notable furnishings is a carved oak Madonna figure from the 15th century, once part of an altar shrine, and a Baroque pulpit added in the 17th century. The medieval triumphal crucifix that once hung in the chancel arch is now kept at Borås Museum rather than in the church itself.
The font, carved from sandstone in the later 12th century and also attributed to the Ottravad Master or his workshop, is now held in the collections of the Swedish History Museum rather than displayed in the church; it is decorated with figures including a swordsman, entwined beasts and human forms, though it has suffered considerable damage over the centuries.
Valuable medieval church silver was stolen from the old parish chest during a burglary in 1850 and was never recovered, a loss still remembered locally. The church's smaller historic bell carries a Latin inscription of the kind traditionally used on medieval bells, comparable in style to a bell dated 1463 in nearby Hällstad church, suggesting a similar date of casting.
