The church was built in 1957 to designs by the architect Anders Berglund, part of the wave of new parish churches constructed in Sweden during that period to serve growing or resettled communities.
The most distinctive feature inside is the chancel painting by Kaj Järpemark, created in 1982 to mark the church's twenty-fifth anniversary. It draws its imagery from the Book of Revelation, giving the otherwise simple interior a focal point of colour and symbolism.
As a relatively modern building, Fredriksdals kyrka is architecturally modest compared to Sweden's medieval churches, but it was designed with practical parish life in mind, being connected to an adjoining hall, which has made it a popular choice locally for baptisms and weddings.
