Värmskogs kyrka was built in stone between 1760 and 1762, to designs by the cathedral master builder Christian Haller. The stone church was preceded by two earlier wooden churches.

By the shore of Värmeln, about 100 metres south of the present church, lies the older church site, with the foundations of a church from the 13th century and the foundation of a 17th-century church.

The present stone church was founded in the 1760s. The parish had commissioned Christian Haller, a master mason well known in the Diocese of Karlstad, to provide drawings and a cost estimate for a new church. Haller died during the construction period, however, and it was his wife Hedvig Haller who took over the contract and completed the building of the church.

The church consists of a rectangular nave with a three-sided chancel section, an attached sacristy to the east, and a tower to the west. The church was damaged by fire in 1799 but could be rebuilt on the old walls. The exterior has since changed only marginally.

The tower is crowned by a dome and lantern, in a design typical of its period. The nave is covered by a wooden barrel vault with a profiled cornice. A restoration in the 1950s aimed to bring out the original colouring of the church interior and the older fixtures and fittings.

The pulpit is from the 17th-century church. The altarpiece, depicting Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration, was made by the court painter Carl Wilhelm Swedman in 1801.
