Övre Ulleruds kyrka, in Värmland between Ransäter and Deje, was built between 1725 and 1727 on the site of earlier medieval churches beside the Klarälven river. A thorough restoration in 1867 gave the building its present appearance.

The Klarälven river has long served as an important route through the region, and one of the pilgrim paths to Trondheim in Norway is said to have passed this way. A church is recorded here since the early Middle Ages, with the oldest timber church standing just a few metres south of the current building. That earlier church was enlarged during the 17th century but was eventually demolished once its replacement was completed in 1727. The present church is built of horizontal log timber in a cruciform plan, with a sacristy extending to the east; its west tower followed later, in 1796.

The building's appearance today owes much to restoration work carried out in 1867, when the timber walls, originally clad in wooden shingles, were covered with panelling and painted white.

Several furnishings survive from the medieval church that once stood nearby. These include a sandstone font dating from the early 13th century and a late medieval Gothic triumphal crucifix, both tangible links to the parish's earlier history. According to one source, a small medieval reliquary cabinet from around 1500 that once belonged to the church is now held in the collections of the Swedish History Museum.

The altar dates from 1740, its carved figures the work of the sculptor Isac Schullström (recorded as Isak Schullström in one source) of Karlstad. The pulpit, somewhat later, was made in 1778 by the sculptor Eric Grund.

The church has also had at least two organs over the years, the first installed in 1858 and replaced by a mechanical instrument built by E A Setterquist och Son of Örebro in 1922.
