Edefors kyrka stands high above the village of Harads, in Sweden's far north. It serves Edefors parish, the smallest in the Diocese of Luleå, an area stretching along the Lule river valley and taking in Bodträskfors, Svartlå and several other small settlements.

The present church is not the parish's first. An earlier large timber church, built in the Gothic-revival spirit with tall pointed windows and a soaring pyramidal spire, was consecrated in 1888 after being used informally for services from Christmas 1887. It was said to hold some 900 people and was richly decorated inside, with painted angels, coloured glass and an elaborate heating system fed by underground stoves. This building was completely destroyed by fire in May 1918.

Rebuilding took time. An architectural competition drew only two entries, and a local builder's design was rejected by the national Building Board. Years passed before the architect John Åkerlund was commissioned to design a replacement, which was built in 1927–1928 and consecrated at Midsummer 1928 by Bishop Olof Bergqvist.

The current church is a broad, low timber-built long church with a side-set tower topped by a slender spire. Its timber frame is clad in standing board panelling, painted reddish-brown at first but white since the 1940s, beneath a shingled, hipped roof. Inside, the wooden-panelled nave is covered by a trefoil-vaulted ceiling with painted decoration by the Stockholm artist Erik Jerkhe. A sacristy and bridal chamber were fitted beneath the gallery in 1969.

Among the furnishings are chandeliers carved by the architect and artist Valdemar Granlund, who was involved in the earlier design disputes after the fire, together with altar silver and a pair of seven-branched candlesticks. The church has had more than one organ: an instrument by Elis Alm was installed in 1928, later adapted and eventually replaced by a new mechanical organ built by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri in 1968, alongside a smaller choir organ from 1953.
